Data is often dubbed the ‘oil of the 21st century’, highlighting its growing digital economy role. Did you know that global data consumption grew by more than 30% in 2020 compared to 2019, contributing to a data centre workload increase of 120% in the past 5 years?
The next decade will likely see continued data load increases. The growth drivers include 5G, IoT, and similar technologies. As data volumes grow, more energy is needed for data centres and networks. Nevertheless, excessive energy use could spike emissions if sourced from fossil fuels. In 2020, data centres contributed to 300 Mt of CO2, double the emissions of Europe’s aviation industry.
European cloud infrastructure and data centre organisations aim for net-zero by 2030, as per The Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact. However, meeting this ambitious target amidst rising data demand is a challenge for data centres.
