Over the past decade, the amount of data produced & stored has grown quickly. In 2013, there were 9 zettabytes data generated worldwide and it is predicted to reach 120 zettabytes by the end of 2023, representing around 1,233% increase in just a decade. Factors explaining the explosion of data include 192M new internet users going online in the past year, the development of connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a wide-spread increase of remote / hybrid working and digital communication activities.
Consequently, this has led to an increase in the number of new data centres to collect, store and process all of this data. Data centre investment globally rose by 10% in the first half of 2021 compared to the first half of 2020, according to a report by Synergy Research Group. The data centre growth has come alongside the shift from traditional, localised data centres into hyperscalers. Currently, there are more than 700 hyperscale data centres in the world, representing a 100% increase over the past 5 years. Another major shift in the industry is to ‘edge’ computing, which is predicted to quadruple by 2025.
